Hevert-Foundation Continues Its Support For the Gando School Project With a EUR 100,000 Donation

Education is an important requirement for building a socially, economically, and ecologically sustainable future. But the financial means for this are not always available. Unfortunately that is also the case in Gando, a small village in Burkina Faso, West Africa. That is why the architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, who comes from Gando himself, set up the organization Kéré Foundation e.V. in 1998, which helps enable, for example, the construction of schools, sanitary facilities, and other infrastructure in Gando. For many years, the Hevert-Foundation has been an important supporter and is currently providing a large donation to assist with the completion of a secondary school, the production of school furniture, and is helping to plant many shade-providing mango trees in Gando.

It was over 11 years ago when Mathias Hevert, Managing Director of Hevert-Arzneimittel GmbH & Co. KG and Deputy Board Member of the Hevert-Foundation, got to know Francis Kéré by chance on a train journey and passed his enthusiasm for Kéré’s development project onto his sister Sarah and brother Marcus Hevert. That chance encounter evolved into a longstanding friendship. There have been several subsequent trips to Gando, a village in Burkina Faso, to the north of Ghana on the Ivory Coast. The encounter on the train laid the foundation for many joint aid projects by Francis Kéré and the Hevert-Foundation in Burkina Faso, one of the poorest countries in the world.

After the Primary School Now the Secondary School

With its campaign “Together for Gando - 1 cent per package sold” and the help of its customers, for several years Hevert has been providing better living conditions and future prospects for the people and especially the children of Gando. After previously supporting the construction of a primary school, a library, sanitary facilities, and a women’s center, and financing a mango plantation, the Hevert-Foundation is now helping with the next project in Burkina Faso: the construction of a secondary school. For this, Mathias Hevert personally handed a check for EUR 100,000 to the Kéré Foundation in Berlin. Francis Kéré gladly accepted the donation check and explained what the money will be used for: “The sustainably built secondary school will be completed with this generous donation. School furniture will also be acquired and several mango trees planted, which counteract desertification and their mangoes are a popular and vitamin-rich break-time snack for the students.” Construction of the secondary school began back in 2011 and is currently in the final phase of construction. Already in September 2015 a first part of the building was opened with two classrooms. Approximately 500 boys and girls now attend the school. Mathias Hevert fondly recalls his last trip to Gando: “I am still moved when I think about the meeting with the children, teachers, and village inhabitants. It makes me happy and proud to be part of this great development project and to see how much we can achieve with our donations.” Sarah Hevert, Managing Director of the Hevert-Foundation, adds: “When you see these children, you feel that this new place of learning is so important for them. That makes me glad.”

Francis Kéré is an internationally renowned Burkinabe architect, known for his pioneering approach to design and sustainable construction methods. His vocation to become an architect is based on his personal commitment to the community he grew up in. The Kéré Architecture studio builds only sustainably in Gando and is hoping for followers. Francis Kéré offers help for self-help: “My work is primarily a social instrument. My economical and ecological building solutions are always accompanied by a social process.”
